You basically failed shortly after that, because that’s the way the levels were done. Before, if you did something wrong, it would slow you down, show you an animation, and we’d load up your score. ![]() “Actually, one of the things that we have tried is to change the mentality of punishing the player when he does something wrong to the opposite, that when you do something well you will be rewarded a lot. “Now it’s made of crack and cocaine,” jokes John. Remote work was part of Roll7 before the pandemic made it mandatory, which has allowed the study to keep up a good pace. The idea of making a 3D OlliOlli is one that has been around the studio for a long time, but the concept was only solidified thanks to a prototype that had nothing to do with OlliOlli. In the time that has passed since the publication of Laser League in 2018, the Roll7 team has grown from thirty people to seventy-five. The challenge for me was to make all of this satisfying while playing. There were ramps we wanted to put in, huge jumps and angles that were impossible when we were basically doing pixel art. “OlliOlli and OlliOlli 2 are great games, but there are things with physics that we always wanted to do that we never got to work with. “What was always crucial to capture in the original prototype was a unique sense of flow,” explains Roll7 founder and director Simon Bennett. At that time everything was based on precision, and how quickly you could enter a state of flow when it came to accumulating points in a game where landing mechanics were key. The superlative Roll7 skate saga prepares its return with OlliOlli World, a game that will arrive on Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X / S, Xbox One and PC this winter, from the hand of Private Division. OlliOlli, and it’s great to be able to say this, is back.
